Part of the Crawford Hybrids series

"Our responsibility is not infinite; it is limited, even though within these limits it embraces the whole of reality. […] One’s task is not to turn the world upside-down, but to do what is necessary at the given place and with a due consideration of reality."

–Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Ethics.

The last Crawford finds himself in a difficult position to subvert the project on his own, but looks to what is possible regarding the circumstances. He pays visits to the young agrarian workers he and his brothers had conceived and tries to figure out a way to stop this child labour and the unethical experiments they are involved in. He comes to the plantation one day in the early spring of 1999 to find the children emaciated and starving, lying around in their cabins and too weak to go to the fields; the food and supplies delivered to them on a regular basis have stopped coming in after the Syndicate's demise by a rebel faction. Crawford sees to their needs until he concludes the isolated mute drones have been left to fend for themselves. He moves in with the young healer, burns the infected shrubs and apiaries and makes legitimate use of the land for farming and beekeeping, providing a basic education to the children so they can find a way to integrate society.
